Brassica following brassicas...?
« on: May 15, 2013, 19:20 »

I'm out of space for putting the last few of my kale in.

The only space left is where I had some over winter spring cabbage that I have now pulled, used / froze.

That area isn't big, only about 6 square metres. I've not got anything else to go in so, is it ok to put the last remainders in there that I have left?

I know it's a big no no, but don't to waste them....

As long as the crop was fine, and you make sure that you do not use the same patch again next year, no problem

I have probably done this in the past even by accident. I am rubbish at crop rotation. I work hard all year planning where it's going and then can never remember where it was last year  :nowink:

Every year I do a spreadsheet of my two allotments and plan where I am going to put all my crops.  About mid June I have a planting frenzy and everything goes to pot and plants are put in where ever there is a space.  As long as you do not put the same crops in the same place each year there is no problem.  Crop rotation is the ideal but in the end we all have to compromise some times.  Obviously I am talking of a space where you  have not had any problems in the past.

It's not so much as what's going where, it's 'Oh !"£$%^, I still got this, this and this to go in, and I only got that little bit left!

I will need to plant psb where the kale was but the bed has been cleaned by chickens, manured and composted (my compost) so there are plenty of nutrients and there were no diseases there.
I've done this before but avoid more than 2 years running.....

As long as your previous crop was healthy and you didn't have clubroot should be fine for a one off year.

There are those who don't rotate anything and have ok crops one year, poor the next.
Same with 'plot rotators' like myself - again, good crops one year, poor the next - there's a lot of what's why's and wherefores to planting veg.
If they do well, you've gained, if not, you tried to not waste them! :)

I've a feeling I'm going to have to do this too. I've grown more brassicas than last year and will probably overlap last year's brassica bed by a row or two.
