I had tonnes of kelsae and Bedfordshire Champ seeds spare so thought I'd try something a little different. I started them off in modules over the summer and then planted them into the tomato buckets once the toms had finished (Sept. time onwards). They seem to be doing ok - I was going to put them in the unheated GH but so far that hasn't proved necessary.

They're now thick pencil size, some are much bigger (the following blurry photo from my camera doesn't do them justice)

It'll be interesting to see whether they bolt, crop early, die in the frost etc.

Pip pip,
Balders

I've not grown onions from seed before but I'm going to have a go for next season. I have Sturon and Globo seeds. Is there a preference for seed compost or potting compost for the seed tray's?

I just use my normal multi-purpose.  Seems to work fine  :)

I now this is about onions from seed but someone asked how to get smaller onions.  For those who don't have the right conditions to grow from seed and use sets, I start mine early in modules, one per cell for the large and medium sets but there are often some dinky little ones left.  I put these three to a cell and get a good yield of medium sized onions from them, overall more crop from the space taken up than with the larger ones too.

Thanks for the advice New shoot.

My 280 sturon seeds went into seed module trays today, and placed in polestyrene boxes and covered with fleece inside my cold greenhouse. Also sowed webbs lettuce, radishes and spring onions in trays on the greenhouse staging.

Spring onions grow really well in modules, and I plant them out as a complete clump when the soil is suitable mid-Spring. Not had much success with early sown radishes though, so i hope you fare better.

I also just use multipurpose compost, but last year gave them a bit of vermiculiate mixed in to keep it more open.

Going for Showmaster this year for my biggies, and hoping to sow between Christmas and New Year.

My onions hopefully safely tucked up in their polestyrene coldframe in the cold greenhouse.
Cold chilly windy miserable day. Outside temp. 8C. G/House temp. 12C. Seed compost temp. 16C.
Hope it's warm enough for them.

Okay, I'm ready.  I have my seed compost, onion seed ( various ), deep containers, including a deep polystyrene bottom and lid which I ferreted away when it arrived around something mid summer, and itchy fingers just waiting for Boxing Day!!  :) :)

I filled a couple of small seed trays with compost today.  They are inside warming up and I'm trying my best to ignore my itchy fingers  :)

I apologize for going of at a bit of a tangent.
I am planning to grow alias Craig from seed for use as picking onions but not sure how far apart to plant them.
Anybody done it?

How big do you want them? I've only done shallots for pickling.
Closer spacing tends to restrict the size of the end product so I would think maybe  2" apart.

Sow 5/6 seeds per module and plant out in the modules about 6 inches apart. There will be onions of all sizes. February/ March will be soon enough to sow.

Alternatively grow a pickling variety. silverskin is popular for cocktail onions or brown pickling.
