Topsoil Suppliers...
« on: October 24, 2010, 19:52 »
Next year I'm hoping to set up a dozen or so raised beds on some land that I've come into and I'm after some topsoil to fill them.  Does anyone know of a supplier in the the northwest or preferably in north wales that's relatively cheap?  I'm not really sure what the going rate on top soil is?!

What sort of capacity / size beds are you talking about?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well provisionally the beds will be around 3 metres long, 2 meteres wide and about 30cm deep...although I'm sure they're likely to change, the land is rather bigger than I first thought, and depending on whether the earth si any good underneath the weeds they may get shallower or deeper...

Dandys is very good quality but quite expensive, if i was you id have a look in the yellow pages for top soil suppliers and see whos cheapest, plus, if you can have it delivered loose then you will save a lot of money :)

The other option you can do is fill them with manure which is usually free from stables if you can pick it up. Not suitable for all crops immediately but you'd get great crops of squash and pumpkins for the first year!

Don't know how competitive their prices are but there is http://www.turfsoilgravel.co.uk/landscapingproducts/topsoil.asp?id=208
who are based in St Helens. They seem to do topsoil in up to 20tonne shipments.
Someone has been dumping soil on my allotment at night. I don't know who it is. The plot thickens.

Don't know where in north wales you are but there is a sand/gravel quarry at Bryncir which is really cheap if you collect yourself

Beware of cheap topsoil offers, it can be actually subsoil or full of dodgy bits, I'd always go for a reputable supplier that sell screened soil.

Where's this quarry then?  I've got access to a lorry and driver so picking up wouldn't be a problem...
