Making fruit crumbles to freeze
« on: August 21, 2007, 19:03 »
I have a ton of plums here and want to make some crumbles that I can freeze.

Do I cook the entire crumble in the oven (fruit and topping) before freezing?  Or do I cook the fruit, put the unbaked topping on and freeze?

Thanks

Wouldn't it take up less freezer space if you only froze the cooked fruit?

Yes I guess so but I'm not short on space and if poss I'd like to be able to just take one out and shove it in the oven without having to do any more cooking you see.

Okey doke.  This site suggests you freeze with crumble uncooked : http://www.stitchedinholland.com/blog/archives/2006/10/apple_crumble_r.html

I used to mix up the crumble mix, freeze in bags uncooked and just take it out when needed.

Have never tried freezing with the fruit though.

Well I did some frozen with crumble on top and I've tried one of them. The crumble went ever so soggy unfortunately, so in future I will freeze the filling and add the crumble just before cooking.

Or freeze the crumble separately as Ann suggested.
