Walnuts
« on: September 07, 2008, 21:39 »
we have Walnuts when are they ready to use as we opened one the other day and it was not ready.  Should we pick the outer layer off when it is green or wait for it to shrivel off.  Any help gratefully received.

Hi, I am new on this site, so have just come across this post re: Walnuts.
We have got a few walnut trees near where we live. I usually wait until the outer shell starts to crack, then the nuts will be ready to pick. I have heard that when the Walnut casing is still green and are soft enough to push a knitting needle through the whole "nut" thats the time to pickle them. Anyway to answer your original question. I would wait until the outer casing has turned a browney colour.
