I  have quite a lot of gardening knowledge but one problem year after year keeps getting the better of me. How do you store dahlia tubers to get them through winter as the tubers i buy cost me £2.00 each its costly to keep replacing them each year      HELP  PLEASE

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yabba certainly knew a thing or two (or even three) about dahlia growing  :D :D :D

I certainly know far less than him, but can offer a small piece of advice, bearing in mind it is about time to dig them up now..

I cut them back to about six inches tall, dig them up and clean off as much mud as I can. I tie a label to them with soft brown string and store them in seed trays, with the stalk pointing downwards. They sit on the slabs under the staging in the frost free greenhouse. I add a few slug pellets to the trays as I always manage to miss one or two of the little slimers.

Come about March/April I turn them up the right way and pack damp compost around them. Unlike Yabba I usually don't take cuttings as otherwise I would  be over run for space, but this gets them growing before planting them out once frosts are past. I put the tubers down about six inches and try not to knock shoots off - these are then under the ground a bit, but if they stick up I put  a cloche over them.

Some years I forget to do start them off and end up planting them out as plain tubers. The still flower well, just a bit later.

But next year _KEEP Yabba's advice and you will have stronger tubers for it  :D

He helped me a lot in the past  :D :D Top bloke

I agree with all that's been said , but would add that you can also split the tubers in spring , provided they have a portion of the old stalk on them ,and a dusting of sulphate on the cuts they will grow!!

Bish, I am wondering if you mean sulphur here   Flowers of sulphur ceased to be licenced for preventing rot at the end of 2011. I thought I should mention this.

I hope you have labelled them, Mrs Pea

Last year I didn't as I felt sure I would know which was which, only to plant a mid height maroon pompom in the middle of a group of tall cactuses

I have certainly labelled them all carefully this year  ::)

HI, I agree with all the previous comments i dry mine off the cover i big pots with dry compost (old tomato bags ) and keep you eye on them for root going mushy,in the spring when the shoot 3/4 inches take cuttings low down and grow on increasing your plants ……result. This works for me good luck copper.
