Vicks for feather pecking?
« on: January 26, 2017, 16:05 »
i might possibly have found a feather pecking deterrent that works..... Vicks vapour rub.  anyone else use it?
I was sceptical because I've failed with so many sprays and lotions, but thought it worth a go. So far so good and I've only applied it twice.
Not nearly as stressful for the chooks either. They hate being sprayed.  I rub a small dollop into my hands to warm and thin it, then lightly stroke hands over the chook.  They tend to assume the 'crouch', so it's really easy to stroke over them with both hands. No need to rub it in, just the lightest smear. Done in seconds and no upset and stress.
Time will tell.

Not so good really. It seems to work as well as any spray, i.e. Works but not for long.  The problem is it's sticky consistency.  Una has been digging in compost in the run and she is filthy!

If it's nasty for the feather pecker it will also be nasty for the bird when preening .

AH!  Sorry about that.  A bit like the curate's egg, then: good in parts.  Purple spray works well to help heal the pecked ones and betray the culprits!
