tractor tyre planter
« on: May 16, 2010, 20:13 »
has anyone else tried using a few old tractor tyres piled up to make a planter?

part of my plot is very short of topsoil depth so thinking of making a few raised planters to grow carrots, asparagus, herbs and some soft fruits in. the current design uses a tractor tyre planter as the centre piece. but never heard of it being done before.

Bob Flowerdew uses them a lot in his organic garden, but some allotments say you can't have them........so check the rules first.

thanks mum of stig, id not thought about doing spuds in normal tyres.. this would be good though and would free of loads of plot space.

I'm doing strawbs and a few spuds in car tyres this year. The idea for the strawbs is that the fruit drape over the sides and are clear of the soil. My ideal planter would be one the tyres from a Terex 300 ton dump truck  :D

Not sure if the garden's big enough though.

Instead of tyres why not use old compost bags with a cardboard liner for your spuds, I'm doing it this year and to be honest the ones at the house are looking great, roll on harvest. I use the cheap been and qued compost in them (3 for £10) and some comfry juice.  I think you will lose a lot of soil filling the inners of a tyre. good luck whatever you choose

Upside down dalek type compost bins work quite well too.

Not for asparagus I think!  Asparagus roots spread out very widely, but not very deep and you need quite a few plants to get a decent number of shoots.  The plants are good for many years, and may well outlast the tyre.

However I don't think asparagus would mind your shallow soil.
