Little red worms.
« on: May 12, 2007, 15:37 »
HI,
I have just noticed loads of very small reddish coloured creatures swimming about in my water butt. I use it to make a feed by filling it with water and stinging nettles. They look like very small worms, about a quarter of an inch long. Does anybody know what these are, and is it ok to still use the mixture on my veg?

They are probably midge larvae or blood worms

The water will be fine to use :D

Don't get the red larvae though.

Aye, the midges have curtailed manys a fine summer evening's gardening.  Once they get in your hair (YES I do have some left) there really is no ignoring them.   Best repellant : Avon Skin So Soft (also covers up the smell of the whisky)

the big ones are bloodwormas aunty says and the very little ones are called jokers.£9 a pint from most fishing tackle shops also some pet shops sell them for aquarium fish food, some folks make a living out of collecting these, they use a metal blade on a long pole and drag it though the sludge on the canal/lake bed and the bloodworm collects on the blade
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
