Building 2 cold frames
« on: January 20, 2008, 16:02 »
Hi All,

I am going to attempt to build two cold frames next weekend.

I have two doors for the top of the cold frames, 2 large pieces of glass, 2 smaller pieces of plastic, and some laminate flooring.

My plan is to build a frame for each one, fit the glass using plastic with grooves in it to fit the glass into the cold frame (it's real glass and I think would shatter if I tried to drill it or put holes in it), do the same with the plastic on the other side, and use laminate flooring to put sides on it.

This is my first project of this kind     .

Does anyone have any advice, suggestions or anything else.

Thanks
Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Our cold frame is made from our old front door (which was left in our shed when we moved in) - we built up the bottom bit from blocks; I'll try and take a photo; it's very basic but works a treat :D

I can't see laminate being very weather proof, and am guessing it will warp within one year.

Ok, this is ours (I did say it's very basic)

It's south facing so it gets loads of light :D

Thanks for all your replys.

rosemarycallsthegoddess, I think you will be right about the laminate, actually, I do have some pieces of wood, which might be okay for the sides - so I might use this where I can.

Please keep the replys coming, I will need all the help I can get.

I will try and post a picture once I have finished them.

...... sorry copy and paste error, I meant to say Sally A was right about the laminate.

rosemarycallsthegoddess, I would not of though of the idea of your cold frame.  I do have a spare window, so I might try that for this.

Bet that confused the postman.
If it wasn't for chemicals we'd be organic.

Height - tall, solid sides block out light, but low coldframes will smother taller plants.

Ventilation - what will stop the wind flipping the lights right over when they are propped open?

I've got 2 like this, each 1.2 x 5.5m made from pallet slats and polycarbonate sheet salvaged from car ports demolished to make way for extensions - watch your neighbours planning applications/freecycle!

The polythene is to stop mice running up the sides and eating my seeds planted in cell trays.

Here is my cold frame:

I can see you're impressed
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

The bow top window adds a nice architectural finesse to the whole thing.

Pallets to cold frame

From Pallets....

.....to these.  Just need to put the kitchen handles I skanked from work on them. The cold frame is higher at the back, and he's left legs on so he can sink it into the ground. I'm chuffed to bits with them.

Mondays are just weeds in the lawn of life !
