ooooooo so excited piglets have arrived
« on: April 01, 2011, 18:45 »
Well we picked up 3 Mangalitza's about 4 weeks ago, we were told that 1 of the the girls was in pig and due to farrow at either the end of the month or middle of April, Well she gave birth yesterday to 10 very strong healthy piglets and is doing a fab job of looking after them.
We have i have been told got all 3 colours, Blonde, red and swallow. How lucky are we???

Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

They're quite amazing pigs with the curly hair. Aren't the piglets cute though?

Can you tell us more about why you chose this breed and what your future plans for them are?  TIA.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Gandan57, i think the breed chose us!!!!
we see an add on preloved 3 Mangalitza's Free to a good home 2 sows and a boar. rung the lady up and she said she had someone coming to look at them but if they didn't have them we were more than welcome to go and have a look and if we wanted them then they were ours.
we went to see them and instantly fell in love with them all, they are an unusual breed and i think that was what drew me to them, we did a lot of research before hand, and i think even if they had gone to the first person who was looking at them we would have brought some any way.
I am keen to keep the breed alive, i am not really looking to sell them for slaughter if i can help it, i want to register the piglets we have and try and sell them as pedigree's so the breed can grow again. they are quiet a docile pig and love a lot of attention, Marilyn who has just had piglets is a fab mum and despite there size she is quite gental with her babies. We are off to a pig course tomorrow, which deals with breeding and also slaughter, one of our girls actually come from the place we are going to. We chose this course as they have experience in keeping Mangalitza's.

I'm surprised you got them as a 'free to good home' - I'd have thought an unusual breed like that would fetch a premium price.

John
they do sell at a premium price as i found out yesterday, on my pig keeping course, the piglets also sell for a premium price too!!!!!
I think we fell in Pig **** and really did come up smelling of roses, the lady we got them from just wanted them all to stay together and have a good home, i have to say they have certainly stolen my heart, i saw lots of different rare breeds yesterday and i can honestly say nothing compares to them.

Well she's happy they went to a good home and you're happy so that's OK. BRILLIANT

I was thinking that we could get some - if only to wind up the local farmers.. "Now that's a funny sheep!"

Not this year - we're still getting sorted and haven't got the sheep fenced out of the veg plot yet!
