Small dark and hairy caterpillars on apple tree
« on: May 23, 2018, 14:25 »
I have a newly planted ( March) 2 year old tree. I have spotted small ( 1cm) caterpillars on the trunk. Googling coddling moth, it doesn’t look like that. Sorry no pic, I have squished all the blighters. Does anyone know what they are?

Many birds, especially tits, feed their chicks with large numbers of winter moth caterpillars during the spring.

Possibly, these are what the caterpillars were? No caterpillars! - No birds!

I take your point, but they weren’t winter moth caterpillars, which google images tells me are bright green, there were though signs that something ( maybe a bird) has been biting chunks out of the mini apples.
