arggh!!chafer grubs everywhere!
« on: August 22, 2008, 17:14 »
just had my railway sleepers delivered (for free, within the hour of ordering, how good is that?) for my veg patch, and of course began digging enthusiastically. however, there seem to be squillions of these horrible larvae in the soil quite big, maybe 1-2 cm long, transparant white , kinda like a caterpillar but only with legs at the top of their bodies and a big  yellow and black nose. they are horrible, and everywhere! and one crawled up my trousers :( ( I JUST FOUND THEM ON LINE, THEY ARE CHAFER GRUBS)

please help, as id like to get rid before they cause a problem! unless of course im being pessimistic and they are nice creatures.

also, how do i remove the smell of chicken poo from my hands?

thankyou x

Would have thought that the chickens could sort out the grubs for you
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Havent stumbled over chafer grubs yet, but for the chook poo, try rubbing your hands on stainless steel
Works for garlic!

A quick check on googlewoogly says that they mainly cause damage to lawns, but like all plant roots.
The recommendation so far (and there isnt a lot that I can find!) is a propriatory bugkiller, or nematodes (expensive I know) that need to be used now (aug/sep) to work and get rid of the beggars.

Do you have chooks or was it someone elses chicken poo? Really would have thought that they would love scratching them up and gobbling them down. My ducks have almost cleared the garden of destructive pests. The only remaining thing at the moment is the caterpillars onthe brassicas as they are fenced off from them.

nah, it was someone elses poo. my patch is in the corner of our garden as my back is too poorly to have a full blown lotty. apparantly chafer bugs get sniffed out by birds quite well but it ends up ruining the lawn even more, and i think we need to save whats left of it, its a terrible infestation though and i would love some chooks or ducks, we used to have 2 call ducks and chickens when i was younger. however, now i have two dogs, and think they would be top of the food chain hehe as they spend a lot of time in the garden!!  i think i saw one of the dogs (the one who likes slugs) snacking on the chafers whilst we were digging. reckon there was at least 100 in a square meter. :(

ive ordered some nematodes, anyone reckon its worth asking the landlord to reimburse this as we have only lived here 7 weeks and the infestation must have been there years  by the look of it. theres no way we can make the lawn look pretty if not, and i cant grow my veg patch :(

Depends on your landlord, but I can see any landlord reimbursing you unfortunately.  Certainly worth an ask for at least half though
If you dont ask you dont get :-D

im positive its them , they are horrible. reckon if we have them this bad most of the cul de sac must have them. ive ordered the nematode, hoping one lot should clear them. they make me shudder just thinking about them all, i hate the thought of them being under there lol!

im going back to lincolnshire where ive just moved from to go scouring the land for bags of free manure on the side of the road etc- something u dont seem to see her in mansfield!
