finding new plant varieties
« on: June 14, 2009, 19:53 »
Anybody else found a new plant variety just by keeping their eyes open rather than purposely cross breeding and selecting?

I have found several but they have never ammonted to anything so I couldn't put a name to them

First there was a variegated shoot on a climbing hydrangea would have been interesting as the flowers don't last so long but alas failed to root even in a mist propagator

I still have a Penstemon, Sour Grapes with beautiful leaf variegations in pink and cream. I have rooted many cuttings but they all revert to plain green.

I once took seed from  yellow foxglove Digitalis lutea and found some seedlings with a pink flush to the flowers - very attractive. It had evidently crossed with the ordinary foxglove - the leaves were even half way between the two. Alas the seed from these plants reverted to the original D. lutea

Anybody ever found anything interesting?  There are many, now very popular plants which were chance discoveries in gardens or in the wild so keep your eyes open

Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
