Pumpkins

...How do they grow? Do they grow up and up and need a good deal of support? How much ground space does a plant need?

pumpkins like most trailing squash creep along at ground level - a single plant may grow as long as 10-15 feet or more, and even branch off!  You can "train" them within a relatively confined space by staking the vine, and they can grow up (they have strong tendrils which grip any cane or post or even each other) but bear in mind that the fruit will get heavy as it develops and will actually break the plant from its sheer weight.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

With that to consider, is it best to let it creep along the ground and allow it a great deal of space to do so..?

heres how I grow mine through black teram.the teram stops the pumkins from rotting against the soil/keeps weeds down, and keeps the roots damp.

feed the soil not the plants

Yup, in fact it's a good idea to, otherwise the plant will keep on growing and the fruit may not ripen.

The classic way to keep the plant confined is to let the stem grow out to the edge of the space you have available, then bend it and peg it round in a circle or a square - you can get 12' or more of vine out of a four-foot square of soil that way.
