Chicken limping any ideas
« on: May 12, 2014, 20:56 »
One of our pure breeds Sussex Buff has been limping seems to be worse in the morning.  She is eating and drinking well, does not look unwell but has trouble putting any weight on bad leg.  We have of course checked her over nothing apparent feet and toes seem ok and her leg also.  She has been wormed in the last week with flubivet.  At a loss to know what it is.  Comb and wattle nice and red any ideas as to what it may be.  Thanks.

If she has no other symptoms and is otherwise well she could have a sprain or pulled a ligament and will probably heal on its own. Check the leg is not hot or swollen. Have a look i(f you can to see if the skin is bruised) I've had hens with strains and sprains they bounce back.

if she develops a dropped wing or seems vacant or disoriented, or you think something is wrong with her eyesight isolate immediately just in case it's mareks. It's probably not but it's good to know what to look for just in case as the first symptom can be a limp.

Thank you for your reply cannot see any bruises etc but she does like to jump and fairly high at that let's hope it's a strain or pull and nothing too serious will obviously keep an eye on her.

I have experienced mareks disease and a limp can be the only symptom you get - it will progressively get worse and the leg will go forward and stiff

unfortunately there is no cure for mareks and you may find you loose them all , fingers crossed its just an injury
