I'd say not a lot as the conifer will be sucking the life out of the soil, as well as any moisture issues.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

we used to have a huge heebie under our conifer, when we took the conifer out it grew like mad and took over the front garden.

What about euphorbia robbiae ,i've got some under some yew in dry shade and is doing ok but it can be a bit of a thug if it really likes it's spot.Theres also some crocosomia'mistral' under there but I suppose any crocosomia will do.Foxgloves should cope there as well.

I grow chicken dust baths right under the fir and various things including blueberries, berberis, hellebores and Himalayan Honeysuckle (Leycestaria Formosa) at the edge.
I'm sure I could get something to grow underneath but what would the chooks do?

We've gota log pile under one conifer, and are trying to grow some alpines under another, because the ground's so dry.
