Hi ya, just ordered some gherkin seeds cos i love pickles :) ........has anybody grown these?

Website says they can grow outside but i've always grown cues under glass and wonder if the gherkins would be better off inside as well?
Any advice appreciated

Being pedantic, you don't grow gherkins, you pickle small cucumbers to make them!

I grew 6 plants outside last year and was over-run by them. Don't waste your greenhouse space!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi mumofstig,

I grew gherkins outside last year. First lot of plants i tried were not very successful, left uncovered, they do need a bit of heat. Tried the second lot under polythene, these came up fine. They do take up quite a bit of space. You also have to keep your eye on them. Very small one minute, oversize the next. Tried (Cucumber Gherkin National) from Terwins Seeds. Still got some seeds left over so will be setting these this year.
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

No sense of humour tonight?  :?  Still got sore knees?

I know they're cues thats why i wanted to know if they went under glass like my salad cues! Some people seem to think they are better off with some warmth, so i think i'll put them in big pots n see what the weather does before making up my mind where to grow them.

Thanks everyone

No... that's why I posted a link to something amusing.

I still wouldn't waste greenhouse space. These plants get very big and need a lot of room to trail/climb if you want a decent quantity.

Mine survived a late frost, whereas the outdoor cues next to them bought it, along with the courgettes!

We grew some last year. Very successful, served them to the family at the traditional Boxing Day Smith Buffet, as good as bought ones
Really easy to grow.
Go for it outddors

The put Gherkin on the packet for obvious reasons -

Rather than ''A small cucumber which can be harvest when approxiamatly between 1 inch and 2 inches long, then blanched, and put in a jar with a pickling liquid and stored for up-to a couple for years in a jar with a label on saying GHERKINS''

No Alex - you've have to do it correctly.

I would accept a label saying "For Gherkins" though, to save writer's cramp.

Ok, so why not put a picture of a jar of Gherkins on the packet instead?

With the title

Cucumbers for Pickling'
