Mother hen still with chicks
« on: September 30, 2011, 13:49 »
Hello there,
I have a broody hen who has three chicks that she has brought up.  The chicks are now 10 weeks old and she is still with them.
At about 7 weeks old she was up on the perch of the broody coop and I felt that she was ready to leave the chicks so I put her in the main house with the other hens after dark.
The next morning I let them all out.
The chicks were fine in their separate coop and run but broody hen was being bullied a little by the other chickens.   I came back to check later in the morning and she had flown over the electric fence and was pacing up and down beside the broody run so I let her back in with the chicks.
She is still with the chicks and although I have opened the end of the broody run now so that the chicks can start to range with the other hens She has shown no sign of wanting to go into the big coop at night but always goes into the broody coop with the chicks.
My instinct is to leave her until she is ready to move over; however perhaps I should be putting her in the big coop at night now.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Many thanks and sorry for the long post  :)

She is being a very good mother, I'm a softie with my girls and if I had this, I would leave her while she is happy.

she's fine, I have one broody who has 5 chicks still with her and they are older than yours - they all free range but she still calls them to let them know when she has found some tempting treat  :D

I went down to shut the hens up tonight and found that broody and chicks had decided  to go into the big coop.  The chicks were on the floor and the adult hens were on the perches.  It seems that they have made their own decision.   :)
