Saving tomato seed
« on: August 24, 2009, 13:22 »
I would like to try to save some seeds from my tomatoes this year.

Does anyone know how to do this and is it successful?

Thanks.

Google throws up numerous links, here's quite a detailed one with pretty pictures!

I trust what you're saving are not F1 hybrids, this can lead to disappointment.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

All I do is spread some seed on a  paper kitchen towel (or a paper napkin if you come across a tomato you like in a restaurant) let it dry, label it and keep it with the rest of my seeds.

Next season I tear the towel up and sow the seeds, including bits of the towel.

I have done it often without any failures.

Cheers,

Gillie

Thanks for the advice and links.  I can't remember now whether they were F1.  I don't have the packets anymore but might be able to find them on the internet.  They were Moneymaker, Red Cherry, Yellow Pear, and Black something.

Will have a look, thanks.

My neighbour has, for many years put one or two very ripe tomatoes on top of compost at the end of the season and left them over the winer. He then adds a covering of compost and waters in the spring, they grow away quite happily (variety gardeners delight).
I find that whenever I spread my own make garden compost around the garden I have enough plants come up to supply the whole village which goes to show how hardy the lilltle seeds are (being heated up in the summer in the bin and then frozen during deepest and dark winter).
