Hello!
We are very excited, have turned our shed into a "hennery" for our ex battery hens that we are getting in May. My hubby has come over all "Lawr"hens" Llewellyn Bow"hen" (sorry....) and created a bespoke abode that will be the envy of the chicken world. However we need a bit of perch advice. Am i correct in thinking thst they dont stand on a wide flat surface but rather, need a narrow rounded perch for their claws to curl around? Advice please!
kippen liefde!!

My perch is about 2" wide the top edges rounded off.

2 x 3 is what is usually used for perches. 2 at the top 3 at the sides, and as Richy says round off the corners.  (Not many tree brances are square   )

B+Q sell timber 67mm dia, i think, which is ideal. its for propping up small trees etc and is pointed at one end. i used it as a perch in my shed, for a variety of large and small chooks, and its mounted about 1ft off the floor

Oh great, thanx for that. The last time I felt like this I was preparing for giving birth myself! Did anyone see "Meet the Foxes" on TV the other night? I was just telling my hubby how cunning foxes were and he thought I was exaggerating then that programme came on and scared us to death. I do love foxes but I dont want them chewing the heads off my girls!

Hi, I have had four ex-battrey hens for a month  I have a purpose bought house, with a run and all mod cons including a perch with a board about two inches under it for any droppings, which can be lifted out, and the whole thing sits about nine inches off the base of the house.  The chickens have never used it,  with three sleeping in the nest box and one in the corner.  I have now taken in down, which gives more head room in the house and put it on the floor, thinking they might prefer to perch on it at a lower level, but it is still not used. I have read that you should not let the hens sleep in the nesting box, but does it matter so long as they are happy and it is kept clean?  I'm not sure whether to just take the perch out completely.  Are the chickens ever likely to change where they sleep and use the perch?

Where would you prefer to sleep

One of my hens always sleeps in the nest box.  I just clean the poos out each morning when I let them into their run
