Rabbit manure
« on: April 27, 2015, 21:18 »
Hi every one

Just wanted to know if anyone had experience with rabbit manure
And how best to use it, with what plants, fruits etc etc
And the best way/mixture to make it.

I have rabbits btw I'm not sneaking around gardens stealing rabbit droppings

Your advice and help as always is greatly received.

Bring on the sunshine

To be honest, Ive never heard of anyone using rabbit dropping as specific manure (maybe you are on to something if you have enough rabbits?! :) )

I'd treat it like every other form of manure. Collect manure + shavings and let it rot down for a year. Don't use it fresh.

one of the best things in the world for growing if you ask me.

you can use it fresh as a mulch, if there is too much urea in it you may have to air it out for a week especially if mulching around young plants.

it rots down nice and easily. i've found it's better if you can keep a bit of moisture in the heap other wise it dries out with the heat. also benefits from regular turning to speed the process up.

i separate the droppings from the bedding/ manure and dry them out, then add to compost mixes or soil as a slow release fertiliser. it stores really well when dry.

people do say abbit manure attracts rats, i've only had one in 2 years of using the stuff. but keeping it moist and regular turning should deter them.

I found this website useful when I was researching alpaca manure. Hopefully it's equally helpful for rabbit manure.

When I visit my daughter I insist that she clean out the rabbit hutch while I'm there! I bring home all the debris and it goes into my compost bin. So maybe 4-5 bags every year. I'm sure it helps! She won't keep it for me between visits. I don't know why! ::)

If anyone wants any rabbit manure I can sort anyone with about a bag a week, will include quite a bit of hay though!  Fresh chicken manure also available!

I have previously managed to separate the droppings from the bedding and used it direct into the soil as it's classed as a cold manure, it's a bit of a hassle though!

H :)

I was watching a nature programme many years ago and was surprised to see a rabbit eating its own poo, apparently the grass goes through twice so I would guess there is not much nutrients left but any soil amendment is better than none, Dave
Today i will be mainly wearing no trousers

They do two types of poo, one is dry and is called a fecal pellet, the other is wet and like a bunch of grapes which is full of nutrients which they reingest. Their version of 'chewing the cud'!

I compost all the poop and hay from my two rabbits litter box along with kitchen waste and grass trimmings, I would use it direct but I find I just end up with loads of grass from the seeds in the hay!
