Newly planted Rasperries?
« on: March 14, 2010, 17:39 »
Hi

I've just planted 10 summer and 10 autumn canes.  Is it necessary to cut them back?  I notice they did it on the Gardeners World programme the other day.

TIA

Hard as it is to decide to do the normal advice is to cut them down to 6 inches and not plan to take a crop off them in the first year. The Summer ones are unlikely to do anything anyway - its the "suckers" from the roots which will grow this year, and fruit next year, that you want (and maybe cutting them down forces more suckers for next year).

The Autumn ones will produce suckers which fruit THIS year, so they may give you a light crop, they will produce a lot more suckers in their second year (IME)

Iv'e just dug mine up (Autumn) and moved them to another part of the garden but I bet they still fruit this summer.

I was lucky in that I inherited my canes from the last plot holder. However I'm having to grub some out as they're spreading half way down the plot and outside the boundary fence. One of the old boys has told me that on our site it's not a matter of cultivating raspberries - it's stopping them!
