I successfully moved my acer twice before finding a spot it liked (part shade and sheltered from the prevailing winds.)

Best moved when it's lost its leaves and is dormant - personally I'd go for in a couple of weeks time to give the roots a chance to settle in before winter sets in.

Current thinking seems to be to not fill the planting hole with much in the way of compost or manure, which can encourage the roots to stay where they are rather than spreading deeper and wider.

Thanks JAY,scorching is the main reason for the move so a more sheltered spot will be its new home. Thanks again for the tips.
