been a novice am after information as to what needs netting from birds and what does not, it would seem that  the birds are fussy and do not eat everything.

If it is my sparrows then everything; they are not fussy  >:(

Seriously though, the number one veg that I need to cover is my mangetout peas.

As for fruit, we would have no currents or raspberries if they were in the open.

If you have neighbourhood pigeons then all your brassicas need netting.  To also protect them from cabbage whites use netting that is 7mm or less.  I blame sparrows for my poor broad bean crop as I didn't bother to net them.  Sparrows will also have a go any any young green leafy veg and young green veg tops. They peck through my netting to get at the ones touching it.  So far they've nibbled beetroot tops, perpetual spinach and peas.
Cheese makes everything better.

Yeah agree with brassicas - down mine the pidgeons peck all the outside leaves and try to strip them bare - then the white fly does its best to annoy me and then the cabbage whites come and finish them off!!!  >:(

It's a wonder we can grow anything successfully - or that we have the determination to keep trying. :D

and if you don't cover carrots with very fine netting such as enviromesh, you run the big risk of them being ruined by carrot fly grubs   :tongue2: :tongue2:

What should I net on the lotty?
Hi guys,
Just wondering what fruit and veg is a must to have netted?

I've started to get shoots sprouting through of varying things I've sown (which I'm dead pleased about) and don't wanna lose my 1st ever crops coz there's loads of pigeons about.

I have loads of debris netting and access to all manner of plastic pipe, timber, etc, to use to construct covers with (perk of managing a construction company)  :D

Thanks

Stratts

The closest best answer is to have a stroll on your site. Old timer's plots will tell you, what gets eaten on location.

Brassica plants and carrots are usually a must cover crop on most locations.

Just found this thread after looking for my own, must remember the search function!!

Would it hurt if most things were netted?

I think I may have planted stuff wrong, mixed up and a bit close together!
