Blightwatch 2016
« on: May 11, 2016, 08:21 »
DON'T PANIC!!!!    There no outbreaks shown yet,  but with an eye on the current damp weather, and it warming up, I thought it worthwhile starting this year's thread.

The fight against blight website is here
http://potatoes.ahdb.org.uk/online-toolbox/fight-against-blight-tool It's worth signing up as you will get a warning when conditions are right for blight, in your surrounding are and if any blight has already been found nearby. It isn't perfect but does give you some idea of local conditions and risk.

The map showing outbreaks is here (the map is hasn't been cleared from last year yet!)

Unfortunately, the RHS says that
Quote
Chemical control.
There are currently no fungicides available for use by gardeners against blight on potatoes or tomatoes.

Their advice page is here

Got a Smiths period warning from Blightwatch this morning.   :(  How depressing is that, this early in the season.

Acording to the blightwatch website, there is a severe outbreak of blight south west of Stafford in the ST20 postcode.

Also in Cornwall.

Needs temperatures consistently above 70f to develop.

No hope of that here but watch out if it gets warm.

What I find very annoying is that there are still cases found in outgrade piles (as in Cornwall)
When will growers learn!  >:(
They really won't be popular, locally, if it spreads  >:(

Sources of infection on allotments are volunteers from last years crop and potatoes growing out of compost heaps.

Oh no! It looks as if the thunderstorms brought blight

I've just picked some black leaves off the Kibitz tomatoes in the garden  :( Have to walk round to the plot to look at the potatoes, later.

Too late - the leaves are in the bin!
It was late blight -the leaves were dark grey/black and beginning to wilt:(

Bit difficult to tell from that picture but as it has appeared so quickly it could well be the dreaded ...

at Colwyn Bay LL28 4 postcode.  Number of plots affected.  Taken out  2second earlies which have wilted pretty much over night.  A neighbouring plot owner has just given me a splash of bordeaux mixture as she was spraying.  Have only planted pots this year to help clear an area previously under raspberries so I'm less concerned than perhaps others.  Not overly happy at the use of BM though.
