Root Ginger sprouting.

Just noticed today that my Root Ginger is sprouting and wondered if it will grow and what to do with it, Wellintons says you can freeze it but I'd like to see what happens if I grow a bit?

Can do but it's not really the best time of year for it as i believe they die back a bit due to lack of light in the winter. Indoor only crop. I can look it all up in my veg book later if you want.
I tried growing mine at the lottie for a bit last summer and found it was too unhappy with having its leaves eaten all the time by the slugs!
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Her ginger us also sprouting, so - yes please - look it up and let us know what to do with it! Tried planting it in a pot last year in the greenhouse, but as soon as the roots got put in a pot they curled up their toes! Ungrateful wretches. O
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Pop it in a pot of reasonable compost with the shoots just showing.  Starting this time of year I would suggest overwintering indoors, but next year a frost free greenhouse/conservatory will be OK.  Bright green foliage with largish leaves up to 4 ft high - not especially inspiring, but you do get new root ginger!

Thanks - it's off to the potting shed I go, to get her organised to have a go. While she is at it she can do a spot of tidying up too! Come to think of it, the poly needs sorting out - pull up all the spent toms etc ...
