Joining two sheds together
« on: February 24, 2007, 16:23 »
I now have two old sheds waiting to be built.  Pretty sure they can be joined together, but as they both have apex roofs I would like some advice as to what to do about the valley that will form between them.

Also, as money is tight I would like to know if I can just put down some weed membrane and  shingle for a shed base?  The soil is level and very compact clay.

Over to you geniuses

Are they the same width and roof pitch to where you could end up with a long thin shed (and no valley)?  Would you want this?

Cut the over hang of each roof off on the side that you are joining together, bolt sheds together and run flashing to join the two roofs together then felt in the normal way, you will then need a water down spout hopper to catch the water at both ends to catch the water from the valley. and lead them into water butts.

Shed base, I would sit it on tanalised fence posts possibly sandwiching plastic between posts and bottom of shed to stop damp rising.

as far as the membrane goes, it all depends on how long you want your shed to last, if you don't mind replacing it in a couple of years then you could possibly get away with it, what about making up a frame of blocks, along where the supporting struts are so you have a small gap underneath the shed so the water doesn't come in contact with the wood. you also need to think about any dampness rising up and spoiling what you've got in the shed.
also if you get in touch with your council, they often sell off old paving slabs (the big ones) really cheap
I personally would go for slabs

Thanks all.
WG, unfortunately the sheds are different widths, but thanks.

richyrich7, if you do that then inside the shed where the roofs meet you
will have to duck to get to the other side, unless I've misunderstood.  I like the tanalised timber and plastic sheeting idea though.

purplebat, I'll check out the council, good idea.

Keep them coming folks

This is true  I hadn't thought of that   unless your very short ?
Can't think of an easy way after that , unless you have some spare timber to infill with, then you could have a weird apex/flat hybrid,  kind of thing, or an elongated apex ?

Hi rich.  I think the weird apex/flat hybrid thing is the way to go.  A higher apex might strain my carpentry skills.  Wish my dad were alive, he could fix anything with a large hammer and some six inch nails, maybe even my computer! :D

Hi all
I joined 2 6x4 foot sheds together and overcame the roofing problem
I just lifted one side up and made it higher so the water would run off and put a bit in the remining gap
I just screwed one shed to the side of the other and took out the window and bit of wall i didn't need
Pics here

hope it helps and any further pics or info let me know i will take some thanks

The original request was in 2007, so I guess the issue was solved  :)

Thanks for the comment though  :D
