Does horse manure “ burn” new raspberry canes
« on: December 09, 2018, 16:23 »
I’ve just gone mad on the Thompson and Morgan website and bought 14 raspberry canes. I have read that you shouldn’t  put the canes in horse manure covered soil.  My best spot  for planting them ( really the only suitable spot) has recently been heavily manured  after I read an article on No Dig. I’ve removed as much as I could today but there’s still quite a bit of it here and there. I’m hoping to plant them next week. Is it likely to be a problem?

I've used horse manure round both new raspberries and strawberries but it was old manure not new you haven't said if you put new or old manure on the beds prior to planting ?

I have to say that's only my way and some professional gardeners and other's mite disagree with me you could put them in flower pots till spring then plant out?

Thanks for that. The manure is brought round to the plot but the council from nearby stables. I don’t think it’s fully rotted. It is mostly straw with semi rotted manure. I hadn’t thought of putting in pots till spring, I could do that. Thank you.
