Spring Onions in Containers
« on: April 20, 2018, 19:28 »
Evening All, just a quick one.  I have some "Lisbon" spring onions I want to grow in containers.  Got the spacing OK, not sure what depth container I need.  Any suggestions please?  Enjoy the sunshine! TVM.

I would think 15cm would be fine, as long as you can water them frequently enough as they get bigger.

Agree with pescador. Grew mine in 15cm deep plant troughs. Grew very well, in fact it was the only way I could grow them. They just wouldn't grow in the open ground.

15cm it is then.  They are young plants, about 10cm tall picked up from Homebase.  20 plants for £2, bargain!

In case you want to grow more, it works well to sow a pinch of seed per small module (about 3cm sq) and plant them out as a clump as soon as the roots have bound the compost together, straight into a windowbox or something similar

I'm growing several spring onion varieties as you said razed in modules I usually plant out in a raised beds but going to give growing them in tubs a try because they would be easy to pull save going down the allotments if we only want a few at a time  ;)

Always grow spring onions in fairly deep containers - have a concrete hard standing that is only fit to hold containers. Also do carrots in containers so that I can cover them against "the fly" easily. This is where your stumpy carrots are a good idea.
