Can I move Swiss chard to a different spot?
« on: April 17, 2018, 12:30 »
I have some autumn planted Swiss chard but have realised it is in the wrong spot. Basically it’s too near my cabbages which are romping away and will soon overwhelm them. Can I move the chard a couple of feet away? The plants vary from 2 to 6 inches tall.

I’d think it would be fine at those sizes, just like transplanting

If they are small then they will be ok to transplant.
They do produce a long tap root and beet style root so be careful not to break that.

Why do you sow them in Autumn?
Do think it would be too cold for them then and they would bolt much earlier on growing.
My spring sown chard starts producing early summer and does not bolt until the third year year spring, when I replace the row with new sown seed. Which in fact I have just done.
So normally have a new crop and an old crop side by side.
Same with spinach.

Thanks  :). To be honest lettuce, they were bought as plug plants and I think put in late summer. I moved them today and they looked rather sorry for the, selves due to the heat, but I hope they will rally round.
