My bible for chutneys and pickles is The Basics -Jams, Preserves and Chutneys by Marguerite Patten. You can get  2ndhand ones for about £2 (with free p&p) on ebay atm  ;)

I agree with that recommendation too. It is a good staple.

If you like your pickles a bit more on the hot side then you could also look at Simply Pickles by Sara Ridgley. I have enjoyed some of her pickled onion recipes in the past.
