hibernating hedgehog
« on: March 26, 2018, 17:50 »
Presented with a sunny afternoon I decided to do a bit of a spring garden tidy and accidentally uncovered a hibernating hedgehog! Covered him/her up quickly but chuffed that my chemical free garden is a welcome haven  :D :D :D

That's great, there aren't so many round these days. They will enjoy eating your slugs! You could leave some food out four when he emerges, hungry!

How lovely, they are so cute. Will have been a long winter fort gem this year

How lucky are you!!  We used to see load of them in our garden, but despite not using chemicals of any kind, they don't visit any more.  It used to be the case that if I left the kitchen door open one of them would quite often wander in and try to hide under the fridge.

I just hope that he/she survived this winters low temperatures  :(

Does any one know when I should expect him/her to emerge from hibernation?

They will come in and out as the temperature fluctuates so on a warm day they'll come out but will go back in for more of a snooze when the temperature drops.  They don't stay asleep all winter like we used to think they did.

Like Robinahood says if you put some food out, a ramekin of cat food (deffo not milk and bread) he/she will appreciate it and it'll help them on their way if the slugs aren't appearing.

I drive for a living and have really noticed how few I see even (sadly) dead on the roads.  Hopefully they are doing better in woods and away from human populations.
