I want to plant a climber to grow up a trellis on my house wall next to the front door. Problem is the driveway is imprinted concrete and goes right up to the house so it would need to be in a pot. I have a large 50cm square planter. The aspect is south facing so would get a lot of sun. We’re in Oxfordshire so cold winter nights may be an issue, but I could always wrap in fleece if it dips below -10.

My thoughts so far are jasmine. I like the star jasmine (I know not a real jasmine) but concerned it may be too large for a container and not entirely hardy. Any recommendations for which other jasmines would be most suitable?

Star jasmine is pretty hardy, so long as it isn't waterlogged.  If you stand your container on pot feet or bricks, that should keep it drained over winter.

Real jasmine is a bit of a thug and would outgrow that size pot pretty quickly.  The smaller, better behaved ones like Jasmine beesianum are not terribly hardy though.  You would need to wrap the pot and the top up over winter.

Thanks am tempted by the star jasmine, either that or some kind of clematis. The planter I have stands on legs so waterlogging shouldn't be a problem.
