It won't necessarily stop it altogether, but it will lower the freezing temperature, making it less likely. In addition, it isn't toxic.

Was looking into this when we had that bad winter 2 years ago...

Where's the best place to buy it though...?

Still check it during the day and first thing in the morning though. I put sliced garlic in mine, but I am now using the plastic tool box instead of the water feeders.
Adding warm water will make the water freeze quicker.

You could probably float a ball in the water too. People do this to stop water butts freezing as they can crack when the water inside freezes and this can be expensive.

For my racing pigeons, I just put in a little water each day, enough to satisfy their thirst. The rest will quickly freeze and next day, the remaining ice is easy to snap out of the trough part.

BTW, cold water is slower to freeze than warmer water so this should help extend thawed time.

This video might give you a few ideas as well: LINK

If you have power handy a pond aerator will stop a water dish freezing especially if the pump is in a warm shed .

What the hens will make of it at first is another matter! ;)

Don't think the garlic helps it not freezing, but the housing run is covered all  over.
