Rubarb mulching
« on: March 22, 2017, 11:44 »
I planted 2 big clumps of rubarb in spring last year and it is in full production now. however now  the plants base I feel bit lower than surrounding,  can I put more mulch on top of the plant so that it grow on top of mound next year?

The crown wants to be about an inch below the surface, so next winter cover it over to that depth, I wouldn't add more than that though - I don't think they like deep planting.

I don't think the crown rises, the earth around/over it tends to wash away with time. A yearly mulch, while the plant is dormant, usually keeps the plant happy.
Mulching and picking (oh and removal of any flower stalks) are the only things I do, other than that I just leave it to get on with it  :)

It's often said not to cover the crown, but at the end of the growing season many people on my allotment cover their rhubarb with plenty of rotten manure, 4 inches or more. Every year they never have problems and lots of solid production.

If we can cover the crown while planting,... mulching can cover it right ?. but my new neighbour at allotment site has thrown spent hops of asparagus on top of the very stumpy rubarb patch... may be to kill it . and it does the job. can see it any more

really annoying to see that but it is their plot now.
