Title: Best thing since sliced bread...
Post by: Growster... on July 25, 2011, 05:12
My Aunt Connie, sadly long gone, used to slice bread in a way that I've never seen since.

She would take the loaf and hold it like you would a rugby ball, under her arm, and cut towards her with a bread knife.

And she'd often have a cigarette on (this was back in the 1960s when you were allowed to smoke...), and probably talking and laughing at the same time...

It is actually an accurate way to slice bread, as you can see the slice from all angles, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else uses this method!

The same action was used by my grandmother and by all accounts Mrs Digger's grandmother.

It appears to be a genertion thing and possibly one of the earliest activities that fell foul of elfin safety, once their other halves found that they actually preferred chicken breast in their sarnies.

The loaves were a lot bigger then, weren't they? I can remember a sandwich was made from 2 half slices rather than a whole slice each side :)

Aunts and grandmas in our family did this too, but loaves were also more solid in those days  ;)  so didn't get crushed

Mrs Digger says that the reason that they were solid, (in her case anyway), was that the bread was bought fresh & warm, then left for 2 or 3 days before using!

We started on the loaves when they were fresh, but had to carry on eating until it was all gone. The last day was always as toast, cos it was too dry to eat without toasting, unless it was for dipping in the ever-present stewpot :nowink:

And that was exactly what my Aunt Con wanted DD!

She only ever liked 'stale' bread - or a few days old!

Mum, one of my first ever jobs as a very junior junior, was to go over the road to Gizzis, and buy the sandwiches...

That takes me back a bit, as their sandwiches were all made as you watched!

Or we went to the Pie shop in New Rents!

Sometimes with a really fresh load of bread, I stand it upright on the board and slice from right to left!  I always get a much straighter slice than if I slice downwards!

It's the spirit level built into every womans wrist.  Blokes splash their drink about when "tired and emotional".  Wimmin.  .  . ::)  .  .Cheers,   Tony.

I do that occasionally and it drives " 'im outdoors" completely nuts!  he hates me doing it, offends his sense of what is right in the world ..

I made my usual bread dough, earlier, but thought I'd just bake it on a flat tin, rather than in the loaf tin, for a change
It must have been a bit too wet as it spread rather wider than it should. When I picked it up to slice it I carved it towards me, without thinking.

So it must be the shape/size of the loaf that makes the difference, cos I wouldn't cut a loaf baked in a tin that way :nowink:

Good Grief!
I'd forgotten all about that style of cutting bread from my Grandmothers day.
Certainly brought back memories.
Re the last comment about the bread spreading.
A real Italian ciabatta bread is baked this way, so that it spreads out in the tin.
As the ciabatta actually means 'slipper', which is the shape it forms.
We normally make two of these a week as they keep well due to the olive oil.

Yes, but ciabatta is sposed to be flatter, mine shouldn't have been. But it still tastes very nice....it's walnut bread mmmmm

What would a man know about what's right in the world?      If it works, do it!
