hi there i need help identifying some squashes
« on: July 20, 2017, 04:36 »
Hi there i'm new to the allotment world have been only doing it now about 3 months my courgette plants are producing courgettes yet my pumpkin plants have started to produce a debate rather than pumpkins, on the allotment where i am some people have speculated oversized courgettes while some have said they are gourds i looked them up and one looks more like a zucchini

And a closeup of its coating

the others no one's quite sure some have surgested mutants or cross polinations the werid thing is all the pumpkin plant seeds originally came from a pumpkin ....

Pumpkins and squash cross pollinate very easily.  You have a hybrid there.  I've inadvertently grown something very similar before.

You will have to wait and see if the resulting fruit is good to eat or not.  Sometimes they are OK and sometimes a bit tasteless (but edible)  :)

Some look like large courgettes/zucchini (both the same thing) but  if the seeds came from a pumpkin, rather than from a packet, then the original plant may have been cross pollinated.
When that happens you get fruit that is neither one thing or the other, all different shapes and sizes, depending on what pollinated what  :nowink:
They may or may not be nice to eat, but here's only one way to find out  :D

Yes, it does look like a hybrid. I had one pop up last year that was fondly nicknamed Blimpy, as it grew such massive dark green "blimps" that looked remarkably like your photos. It was amazingly prolific, in fact so prolific we found it difficult to donate the fruits to anyone in the end. Eating them at courgette size would certainly be more sensible than allowing them to grow as big as giant marrows!
