Title: When is it too hot in a greenhouse?
Post by: Yana on July 15, 2013, 07:50
I've had vents open in the greenhouse for days / weeks now, but can't leave the doors open as we have inquisitive cats from several neighbours and often wander in l(the cats not the neighbours  :D)
Also, magpies and pigeons who have been nosey as to what they might be missing if they don't go in and have a look.
Sorry..... I'm wandering ..... My question is when is it too hot in the greenhouse for the plants to grow? I have tomatoes and cucumbers in an aluminium one and chilies/peppers/aubergines in a wooden one and the temps are getting into the mid and upper 30'sC. I water regularly but yesterday the leaves did look a bit sad for themselves.

I don't think it's the heat that bothers them, they grow where temperatures are higher than that. Although you could easily net the doors to stop the critters getting in.

When you have to keep watering them, cos it's hot, I think you wash all the nutrients out of the compost. Mine have been much better since I started to feed them more often.

I've been feeding every two weeks as trusses have set on the tomatoes and there are fruit on the cucumbers, chillies, peppers and aubergines. Should I feed more often??

The poly we grow in usually hits 90f by 7am  the only thing that struggles is the people, i refuse to go in at the moment, hubby is always moaning its never hot enough so its his turn.

I do need to feed mine though.

I was in my greenhouse last week - the windows were closed and my thermometer said 50.7C.

And over the weekend, with windows open it was 49.8 C.

Everything is thriving - I just need to make sure they get watered regularly.

Seems like I am panicking unnecessarily with others experiencing high temps too. I'll keep watering and feeding and a close eye on everything.
Thanks all.  :)
