Seed Tape
« on: December 29, 2018, 09:46 »
Good Morning, and Seasons Greetings to you all!  I am thinking of using seed tape (home made) for my carrots next year.  So many tips and tricks on the internet.  The most popular are either corn flour paste (or similar) on kitchen type paper, or someone suggested just laying them on thin masking tape and putting the tape straight in the ground when ready to save storing.  Does anyone have an opinion having used them before?  Comments very much appreciated.

I have no experience of seed tapes, but wonder whether masking tape will break down easily given that it has a glue on it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I used some purchased seed tape for beetroot a few years back and very good it was too.
No idea where it came from, don't remember buying it!
I would think kitchen roll would give better results, but possibly a bit more tricky to use.

I used some carrot seed tape from King Seeds two or three years ago. It was very good, in that no thinning was required, but I missed the thinnings to eat!

The paper was very thin and flimsy, and appeared to have the actual seeds stuck inside the two layers.

My question si this... If you have to stick the seeds into the tape individually, would it not be just as easy to sow them like that?

Bog roll, moisten, arrange the seeds then fold over and leave to dry out, probably best done close to planting time in case they germinate straight away!

Unused I assume, I'm sure we're not advocating additional manure here ;)

i must admit I haven't used seed tapes for carrots but I know those who have and they have had good results I personally sow my carrot seed either in paper pots or directly in the ground because I buy pelleted seed there better to sow individually

Update, 9 January 2019!  I have the first 4 seeds through and looking healthy, not bad for 11 days.  OK these were indoors but just planted in normal top soil and watered.  I seeded 9 on masking tape and 9 on paper towel.  2 on each so far.  I've also done the same in some seed compost to compare results.  Helps pass the time.......I will post more updates later.
