Chicken with eyes closed
« on: May 13, 2011, 20:09 »
Hello all !
10 days ago, we bought 4 No. 26 week old Black Rocks. All have settled well into our previously called 'wild' garden (even wilder now !). All are eating and drinking well, however one of them, more or less since we've had her, is often closing her eyes and sometimes hides her head under the feathers of her back.
We have been assured that they have been vaccinated and as a precaution we have wormed them. We are putting apple cider vinegar in their water and a little chopped up garlic mixed with their layers pellets.
Today we started giving her a little liquid paraffin.
There is so much information out there in computer land, we are getting confused !
Does anyone know what could be wrong with her ?
Many thanks.

Hello Jeff,

sorry to hear about your hen.  :(   I know what you mean at the masses of info that is out there.  I am not that experienced but there are a few things that come to mind.

What wormer did you use?

Does she have a temperature?  You take this by feeling under the wing of one of your other girls and then under her wing to see if she feels warmer.

Is she eating, drinking and poohing OK?

What colour is her comb?

How is she moving, for example does she have a limp?

Is she low hen in the pecking order?

In the meantime good luck and keep us posted  :)

Hi BN

The worming milky stuff was just one dose of 2ml of  PANACUR per bird - but she (Bonnie - all the girls being named after welsh rock chicks) was closing her eyes previously.

I will check her temperature tomorrow.

She is drinking and eating like a good 'un. All their poo in the main, is black with a little bit of white, but I have noticed a little bit of runny green in the garden. I'll keep a close eye on her in the morning.

Her comb is a lot smaller than the others and I reckon a little paler.

She runs around fine and seems to integrate well - perhaps a bit shyer.

Thanks !
