Is lavender safe with chickens?
« on: August 22, 2010, 15:15 »
I am thinking of placing some lavender plants are my chicken run to deter the flies. Is lavender safe if the chickens eat it? ???

Lavender seems to be one of the few plants chickens don't want to eat. Lavender flowers are OK for humans to eat and are used frequently in recipes so I guess they are safe around chickens. Just did a quick search and these are some other plants that they don't seem to bother with.

Rose of Sharon
Most shrubs and bushes
Rosemary
Lavender
Hardy Geraniums
Hardy Fuschias
Foxgloves
Primroses
Pelargoniums
Oriental Grasses & Bamboos
Clematis
Roses
Honeysuckle
Perennial Sweetpeas
Wormwood

Please don't plant foxgloves where animals can reach it.  It is extremely toxic, and small animals especially can die of digitalis toxicity after ingesting only a small amount.

Hi Syndrome3, is that true? I only ask because I was talking to a lad on the plot who has a biblical fly problem at the moment, and I mentioned that there were essential oils (and therefore plants) that repelled flies.

I could only think of tea tree though, which is Australian, I think!  ::)

If Lavender has the same effect, I'll tell him to get a few plants in.  :)

basil, bay leaf, lavender, mint or rosemary are all said to repel flies and mosquito's. Perhaps a bit of companion planting is needed by your friend Scabs.
Staffies are softer than you think.
