How to sow scotch bonnet seeds.
« on: May 16, 2010, 19:16 »
I was given some scotch bonnet peppers direct from Jamaica, I have removed the seeds and dried them but I am not sure how to sow these, so any advice welcomed.

Are they chillies?  Would have thought it might be a little late but I might be wrong.

It is a bit late to sow these unless you can keep them indoors through the winter.
Chillies are usually sown very early in the year, because they can be very slow to get to fruiting size.
Maybe try a couple just to see what happens and save the rest for next year?

Sow them in a small pot or seed tray, cover with plastic bag and keep them somewhere warm (or in a propogator) until they germinate....but be warned they can take weeks to come up, not just a few days like tomatoes.
Good luck  :)

I don't know about specifically sowing them, but I'd be careful about wiping your eyes (or any other sensitive part of your anatomy) after handling them, in case the heat is present on the seeds, if you get my drift ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Its way too late for this year, bonnet need a long season and 4 months just isn't enough.
Best wait for next  year :D

Make sure the seeds are properly dry and store them away for January, then sow as MOS suggests.

mumofstig thank you I will give it a go see how I get on I have plenty of seeds, my plan was indoors with a Mylar reflector and a heat lamp.

Yorkie I understand fully I have been caught out with these peppers even after a few hand washes, still had some on me.

Ok so I'll not try this year then, I did place an order for a dorset naga and two other pepper plants so not all is lost pepper wise this year.
