Sunflowers
« on: June 02, 2011, 22:09 »
I have some sun flowers growing, just from the parrot food from pet shops. They came up quite quickly and are around two inches tall with just two leaves but one by one they are being eaten.
What/who eats them?
I have scattered slug pellets around them which has made no difference at all. We have wood pigeons a plenty - could it be them?
Ive put some more seeds in to make up for them but I need to find out who the culprit is and stop it.
Rabbits dont come to our garden, it is visited regularly to my four cats who are pquite parshall to fresh rabbit  ;)

I am voting for the pigeons....

They are the avian version of labradors, if it stays down its edible....
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Would the slug pellets not take care of the snails as well?

I have the same problem.

I am fairly sure it's not pigeons or slugs/snails, the only other thing I have seen alot of in that area is ants...

I have been trying to watch my dog as she always likes to taste anything new I grow  >:( but the damage is a bit on the slight side for her to be the culprit.
Please be patient! Learner gardener - allow plenty of room when passing!

In theory they should, but you might have eggs in the soil, allowing youngsters to bypass the pellets. That aside, slugs and snails can be pretty persistant against pellets. :( I'm not saying it is that, its just a suggestion as I know that has beeen my problem in the past, as only select veg get pellet treatment here.

:)

I have the same problem.

I know that's not my problem as my dog is definitely a salad dodger!

It is not dogs here and I have not seen any ants. The edges of the leaves have quite big looking chunks out of them which is why i thought wood pigeon. The soil is not disturbed.
Tomorrow I might put a light net over them to see if it stops happening - I have only got three left though.
Is it too late to put some more in?
