strange behaviour
« on: June 07, 2007, 18:53 »
Hi just wondered if you could help me, i keep chickens myself and have successfully hatched numerous chickens. My friend has recently got a few chickens for her back garden and after having them for only a few weeks one of her chickens died. She wasn't sure what was wrong but she died very quickly. She went back to the place where she got them from and the man said it could be purple beetle? Anyone heard of it?They are supposed to be poisonous. She contacted me today to say another chicken is doing the same. This time the chicken is standing with it.s  bottom in the air and kind of arched. Just wondered if anyone has heard of this?  :?

Hi noodledoo, welcome to the forums  :D

Purple beetle,  that's a new one on me

Unless any of our more experienced chook keepers have heard of it I think the breeder might have been trying to avoid his responsibilities

It sounds to me that your friend needs profesional medical advice or she might lose them all

Thanks Aunt Sally ! i said the same ,that he was avoiding something. She has separated the chicken now and giving it full attention too. I have looked up purple beetle on internet and all i got was a purple beetle car !! I did wonder if it had eaten something in the garden ? I will keep you posted.

I'm sure as a chicken keeper yourself you have advised her to worm them regularly.  Were the chickens she has vaccinated against the common chicken things.  I'll guess you won't be able to judge that if the purple beetle story is anything to go by

Hi noodledoo welcome to the forum, I think someone's pulling a fast one on your friend.

Cobblers? They don't make shoes anymore, they've been replaced by slave/child labour.

I think the purple beetle was called Herbie.
