Limp Lettuce
« on: July 19, 2012, 12:27 »
I dug up a lovely lettuce yesterday but after a couple of hours it was going limp. Is there a trick to keeping fresh lettuce fresh?

I used to have a bowl from Tupperware that had a little trivet in the bottom.  You pick the lettuce whole and stand it in the bowl with enough water to barely touch the bottom of the lettuce.

It also has a lid.  I still have it, but haven't used it for ages.  You could also use an ordinary pudding basin or something?

I'm only using cut and come again style lettuce at the moment, which goes limp very quickly if left out in the air once it has been cut.  I wash it as soon as arriving from the allotment in a salad spinner thing, pat dry and then put into a bowl with clling film or large tupperware and then in the fridge (i have a fridge that is kept almost on the warmest setting for keeping veg / cheese and anything that does't like to be too cold).   I find this method keeps the lettuce lovely and crisp for up to 3 days!

I’ve just been keeping mine in a bowl of water which isn’t ideal. It’s a shame because my lettuces look so nice and green in the ground. How do the supermarkets keep their looking lettuces so fresh?

Well I haven't tried this one yet,

but I also bought these green bags from a cheapy shop that were supposed to keep your salads fresh.  OH kept moaning about plastic bags everywhere so I gave them to my daughter.  She uses them!

We use the green bags, they really do seem to work.

I have often wondered if they are worth the money

Just wash it, spin in a tee towel, put in a plastic bag like from a supermarket check there is still some moisture, close bag keeps fresh for about 4 days.

I'm lucky to live next to my allotment but if I give any lettuce to friends (which I do regularly) I always dig up with a little soil, put into a small pot and friends then keep them on their back doorstep to use really fresh when they want some.
