Fruit teas .... wine?
« on: September 22, 2007, 02:47 »
Hi everyone,

I have just been given ten packs of [different] fruit teas.

I am looking to make some wines. I wondered about doing

4 pints of tea - per fruit tea.
An acid mix,
Pectolase,
Grape tannin.
GP yeast
Yeast nutrient
B1 vitamin tablet
and about 2lb sugar.
topped up with water

This is for 1 gallon each. What do you think? Will the amount of sugar get me to an OG of 1090?

Do you think this would work?

How many teabags would be required to make 4 pints?

I don't think there is normal tea in any of them.

Any help you can give would be most appreciated.  I have empty demijohns and lots of tea!!!!  :D ......... and a free day coming up soon!!!

Thanks in advance
Cast your bread upon the waters ... and you'll have soggy bread!

Tables vary from book to book and guides on different hydrometers can also show different amounts of sugar for the same reading, but 2 lbs of sugar in the gallon will give you an SG of around 1.075 and a wine of approx 10% ABV. I always use a minimum of 2.25, generally use 2.5 (reducing if fruit sugar content is high) and occasionally go up to 3 lbs (if producing a full bodied high alcohol red wine).

Wines made from ingredients using concentrated flavourings can take a long time to mature.

Thanks David, sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've followed your advice and used 2.5 lbs of sugar.
