Which wire to use??
« on: September 11, 2008, 13:56 »
Hi
Am getting my allotment ready to have some chickens. However, am alittle confused as to which fencing wire to use. I have been told to use chain link fencing as foxes can chew through chicken wire. Is this right? Would appreciate any comments :?

Hello & Welcome

As far as I'm concerned & I think everyone else here will agree, Chicken wire is a no no especially for your main outer fencing.

I always use twilweld (galvanised) think it's 19gauge :?
Always allow enough to dig some in to the ground or like I did make an apron folded inwards a fare way, this will discourage diggers in to the run.

It is more expensive to buy, but worth it in the long run :)

If you look on ebay, you'll find it as welded mesh or weldmesh.  :)

look for 16  or even 14 g its just as good and cheaper  the mesh wants to be 2 x 2. as you build the coop incorporate a base of planking around the sides upto about 18 inches. this wil give protection from rats and also act as a wind break

Ive just bought a 30ft roll of 1meter high 16 gauge galv weld mesh for a job in work, its 1/2 inch square stuff but it cost me £250 which seemed a bit steep   ,Iam sure I'll have some left though to strenghen my run a bit more, also picked up some 1/4 inch square galv stuff the other day, found it in a scrap yard whilst having a look at a job, didnt think you could get it that small

That seems a bit expensive to me too, but maybe I'm getting feet & meters muddles :? :?

Sure I've had a 30 meter roll for £50 :????

I think the 16g is suitable for cat runs, etc. The 19g should be cheaper.

We bought 30m x 900mm for about £40 a few months ago. It was a bit of a bargain on ebay.
