Grow Your Own / Re: Will seed potatoes rot?
« Last post by AndyRVTR on Today at 15:15 »
Mine are in as of this afternoon..  48 seeds of three different varieties, Mozart, Maris Piper and King Edward all planted in one of my double board raised beds, about 8" deep. I've covered with blue crates to keep the local cats off and I have fleece at the ready if it's needed. I've still got some 2nd earlies to plant in 35ltr pots as soon as I get an hour spare!

Grow Your Own / Slug killers and pets
« Last post by Anton on Today at 12:39 »
Help please.    I sometimes take my nine-month-old border collie into the garden. I don't use much slug killer but I do use a bit for the more sensitive plants. How can I prevent the puppy eating the stuff?  Any ideas please?  I've tried all the other options (beer traps, copper, egg shells,...) with little or no success so apart from covering the plants with agricultural fleece or mosquito nets, are there any other ways of keeping the mutt away, apart from tying it up (which I suppose I will have to do once mine and the co-gardeners' plants start growing)?

It’s a no from me too, although I’ll probably plant a few more Red Duke of York in pots to add to the 6 already sprouted.

General Gardening / Re: Cannas
« Last post by Subversive_plot on Today at 11:52 »
I have never grown them before, but have bought some and different place and people are all telling me what soil to use in the prepared container into which I have put alot of crocks and a good helping of pea shingle
What next to get the soil right.  I currently have potting compost and horti grit.  Advice please.  Mrs Bouquet

Cannas are very tolerant plants.  IMO they are best kept in large containers (5 gallons or larger) with drainage holes. Compost or soil should retain some moisture and be kept moist for optimum health (but the plants can survive and recover from dry conditions when necessary). Cannas can survive harsh winters (though I lost one in a container when we had a -14 °C freeze).  They do best with regular feeding of a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

The Hen House / Re: One hen being bullied

I don't personally keep chickens, but I know a number of people that do, or did.  Many that I know that give it up do so because of the responsibility and work required to keep them all healthy, safe and happy.

I would hold off too.
The ground is just too sodden to do anything much I’m afraid.
I have put a bit of rotted manure on my asparagus bed and waved at my autumn planted garlic but that’s about it till we have a long spell of dry weather. HH

Chatting on the Plot / What's lost app.

I wish someone would create a What's Lost app as I have frequently mislaid stuff and it can get rather frustrating to say the least. I've now lost quite a big picture called The Dinner Party by Jules Grun. I know it was upstairs out of the way but I could swear I brought it down and put it in one of the rooms. No, it is not hanging on a wall!  :nowink: I have looked all over the place and under beds, cabinets etc, you name it. Maybe Growster could do one as I'd pay him handsomely.
