What is the treatment for infectious coryza Please!
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:53 »
Hi,I have a Silkie Cockerel and he has what I am advised is infectious coryza-Puffy eyes, foul smelling discharge.I cannot find any links to which treatement he should have.I have been giving him a small dosage of Tylan over 3 days and he is still quite poorly,he seems to be full of life,he is not drowsy, very pirky actually, but he cannot see out of his eyes.

I bathe them 3 times a day so help him but I really want him to get better if possible,I am sure he is distressed.I have been giving him water via dropper but i'm worried for his lack of apetite. Please help,I don't really wish to cull him,he is only some 16 weeks of age and he is so lovely..

Sorry to hear your news.  Although someone more experienced will be along soon I am sure, have just looked in my chicken manual and it says antibiotics and it looks like she needs to be quarantined as its contagious.  You definitely need expert help with this one.

I have already quarantined him,he is in the house at the moment, today still barely any difference though one eye is much less puffier than yesterday.?
I would still like any advice from any Pro's whom may read this please.

3 days A/B may not be enough, but really you ought to be treating all of the chickens that was with him when his symptoms first showed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Baytril is effective against Coryza as well as Mycoplasmosis the other potential problem. 7 to 10 days treatment should be effective and start to show results after three days or so.  Tylan is only effective against Myco so get some Baytril.  Coryza is very contagious and you will be lucky to avoid it running through your flock in about 10 weeks but the good news is it's usually not fatal on it's own though it can have associated complications which are more dangerous.
Usually with Coryza the onset is rapid.  Apparently healthy birds can go down with the symptoms you describe in 24 hrs.  The smell is a typical symptom.  Myco is slower unset several days.
If you have a/b eyedrops that may help the eye symptoms but not effect a cure overall.

Best of luck

Yes I did give them treatment in their water and they appear fine at the moment, the silkie started with just one eye closing up,this is when i took him indoors.

Trouble is it is getting very bad,he is not eating,he looks as if he is not going to make it,he has gone very thin even though i am liquid feeding him,he will not take anything much at all,his beak is open with thick mucus which i clean ever few hours, his face is so puffy and appears to be filled with this mucus,he has the most rancid smell about him.

I have just this minute finished cleaning him and he is very weak.I just feel so "screamingly" helpless this time of the evening,i do have a/b eyedrops but nothing appears to be changing :(

ask your vet for some metacam, this is an anti inflamitory and will help his throat and the facial puffiness. Even though it is syringed into their beak they do like the taste (honey flavoured apparently) so it makes administering it easier.
